The informal recycling of lead is strongly disapproved of by the global regulated lead industry because it is often conducted under poor conditions of safety, health and environmental performance. However the social impact of policies and programs to improve environmental performance and reduce population exposure to pollutants cannot be overlooked when many communities in less developed countries remain viable only as a result of such activities.
